What Does A Black Belt Mean To Me?

What does a black belt mean to me? Let's start off from the beginning. When I was a white belt and going for the yellow belt, during the grading I felt a little bit confident but mostly scared, as I was only a white belt and hard only just started. Now when go for black belt I should only feel a little scared because I know that I have learnt so much and been practicing hard. A person wearing a black belt should be treated with respect, because everyone can see that wearing the black belt has put a lot of effort and trouble to be such a high rank of Martial Arts. This is how I want to feel when I grade for Black belt and especially every time I put it around my body. All the mistakes I make during the grading, in class I will perform better in that area twice as much to be ready for the next grading. When I get my black belt I would like to help instruct the other younger and lower belts. Becoming a black belt has taught me that anything is possible if you work hard at it. I have also a greater respect for the other black belts and my teacher Michael Tan because I know how many years of hard work he has done to achieve his belt too. I feel more confident with grading and very proud. It is AWESOME to be a black belt.   By James Woods Tans Taekwondo Coorparoo

New Black Belts

New Junior Black Belts Brisbane's southern suburbs can now boast three new junior Tae Kwon Do Black Belts. The three boys, Oliver Anzolin, 10, from Fairfield, Tristan Jong, 12, from Mt Gravatt, and James Woods, 12, from Annerley, are the first junior students to receive their Black Belts from Tan's Tae Kwon Do in Coorparoo. Instructor Master Michael Tan, who has over 39 years' experience in the sport, said the students had trained 2 to 3 times per week with him for the past five years. "To achieve the exacting standards of a Black Belt at such a young age is a wonderful achievement," Master Tan said. All three students were required to perform advanced strikes, blocks and kicks, as well as memorizing several formal Tae Kwon Do patterns.  They were also expected to know all of those elements in the Korean language. Master Tan and his wife Claudia said the club was very proud of Oliver, Tristan and James. "A Black Belt is testament to the students' hard work and dedication.  It also shows they are true examples of the five tenets of Tae Kwon Do which are Self Control, Perseverance, Integrity, Courtesy and Indomitable Spirit," Master Tan said. Tan's Tae Kwon Do is located at 72 Cambridge Street, Coorparoo and is open 6 days per week for junior and adult classes.
